Drive, he said

Photograph by Jonathan Williams that was used as the cover for Creeley's All That Is Lovely in Men (1955 - Jargon 10 - 200 copies signed by Rice and Creeley). The Winter of 1954-1955 was the absolute bottom for Black Mountain College and this book by Creeley came out of that discontent. Dan Rice provided the illustrations. When I see this photograph, I always think of the car crash involving Rice and Creeley in the summer of 1955 (see Black Mountain Days pp. 485-506). Michael Rumaker saw this accident as the end of Black Mountain.
Here are is a great association copy that shows how books as objects can capture the essence of a community, in full bloom and as it withers.
and here is another to show how different literary communities intermingle and interact.
