A Monumental Work

The Heads of theTown Up to the Aether, published by Auerhahn Press in 1962 (750 copies), was the most substantial collection of Spicer’s lifetime. Fran Herndon provided the lithographs. A smaller edition of fifty copies was printed in hard cover with a crayola drawing by Spicer. This book is the foundation upon which the later collecteds by Blaser, Gizzi, and Killian were built. All three of these collections are mausoleums.

When I think of Spicer I find myself returning to my copies of Billy the Kid, The Holy Grail, and, especially, J. These publications are ephemeral. Ghostly. Like Spicer himself.
