Elise Cowen

Elise Cowen committed suicide in 1962. Her parents destroyed the bulk of her poems, but 83 poems were saved by Leo Skir. A small selection of poems found their way into the hands of Ed Sanders. Fuck You, a magazine of the arts published four poems by Cowen in the infamous Mad Motherfucker Issue that featured Andy Warhol's Couch cover. Sanders misspelled her last name as Cowan. Cowen would not be properly named and remembered as an important figure of the Beat Generation until Joyce Johnson's memoir Minor Characters.
